Last fall, I applied for and received a grant to assist with the purchase of an Eb tuba. But why buy a tuba? Don’t I play the string bass? Well, in the world of musical theater, there are some musicals that require a bass/tuba double, meaning the “bass” part requires the musician to play multiple bass instruments–in most cases the upright string bass and tuba. Musical shows like Chicago and Ragtime, for example, have this exact bass/tuba doubling part. As a freelancing musician, the more versatile I am, the more potential I have for future gigs.
